Innovative Solutions

The Philadelphia system, introduced in the 1840s, marked a pivotal advancement in addressing by assigning numbers to street blocks. Gary Arndt notes that this system, still used today, helped organize cities into manageable segments, with odd and even numbers on opposite sides of the street 1. However, as cities continued to grow, even this system faced challenges, leading to the creation of postal zone codes in 1943.
