  • Alphanumeric Systems

Alphanumeric postal systems, such as those in the UK and Canada, offer a unique approach to mail sorting and delivery. In Canada, postal codes begin with a letter representing the province, followed by alternating letters and numbers, which help identify sorting stations and local delivery points 1. The UK employs a similar system, with regions often centered around cities and identified by one or two-letter abbreviations, like "EH" for Edinburgh 1.

Oddly enough, many of the countries I listed all implemented postal codes around the same time. It was from the late fifties to mid-seventies that most countries adopted their postal code system.

These systems, while complex, have been adopted for various non-postal applications, influencing factors like insurance rates and bank loans 1.

    Numeric vs. Alphanumeric

The contrast between numeric and alphanumeric postal systems highlights different approaches to mail delivery. The U.S. uses a numeric system, introduced in 1963, which divides the country into zones with five-digit ZIP codes, simplifying mail sorting and delivery 2. In contrast, countries like the UK and Canada use alphanumeric codes, which can vary in length and complexity 1.

The zip code system is very systematic. States are lumped together by numbers. All zip codes beginning with a zero, for example, are in New England.

These systems reflect the unique needs and historical contexts of each country, with numeric systems often facilitating automation and alphanumeric systems providing detailed regional information 2.
