Ancient Algorithms

Ancient civilizations like the Babylonians, Egyptians, and Greeks utilized algorithms for basic mathematical operations. Gary Arndt explains that the sieve of Eratosthenes, an ancient algorithm, was used to discover prime numbers by systematically removing multiples of each number starting from two 1. This method highlights the early use of algorithms in problem-solving.

Start with two, remove all the numbers, which are multiples of two, which is all the even numbers. Then go to three and remove all the multiples of three. And just keep doing this, and what's left over are all the prime numbers.

Al Khwarizmi

The term 'algorithm' originates from the 9th-century Persian mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al Khwarizmi. Gary Arndt notes that al Khwarizmi's work on Hindu-Arabic numerals and Islamic accounting significantly influenced early mathematics 1. His name was Latinized to 'algorizmy,' eventually evolving into the term 'algorithm.'
