Conceptual Development

The Eiffel Tower's conceptual development was inspired by the Lading Observatory, a wooden structure with iron bracings built for the 1853 World's Fair in New York. Initially envisioned as a 300-meter structure, the design evolved significantly from its original oil rig-like appearance. Engineers added a glass pavilion and decorative arches, which captured the attention of Gustave Eiffel, leading him to support the project 1. Design Challenges

The design of the Eiffel Tower faced significant challenges, including skepticism about its feasibility and aesthetic impact on Paris. Critics, including artists and architects, feared it would mar the city's skyline, leading to a public outcry and a scathing letter published in Le Temps 2. Gustave Eiffel defended the tower, comparing it to the Great Pyramid and emphasizing its grandeur 2.
