  • Early Beginnings

    The journey of supercomputers began with the ENIAC in 1946, the first general-purpose computer built using vacuum tubes. It was primarily used for artillery estimates and engineering projects, boasting a power of approximately 500 flops. By 1952, IBM released the IBM 701, which marked a significant leap with 16,000 flops, a 32-fold increase in just six years 1.

       

    Cray's Revolution

    Seymour Cray revolutionized supercomputing with the CDC 6600 in 1964, the first machine to be called a supercomputer. It achieved a computing power of three megaflops and used an integrated circuit as its central processor. Cray's innovations continued with the Cray-1 in 1975, which broke the 100 megaflop barrier and introduced liquid cooling with the Cray-2 in 1979 2.

       

    20th Century Advances

    The latter half of the 20th century saw rapid advancements in supercomputing. The CDC 7600, released in 1969, reached ten megaflops, and by 1992, Intel's Paragon achieved 143 gigaflops. The US government's ASCII Red computer in 1997 broke the teraflop barrier with 1.8 teraflops, designed for nuclear weapons testing 3 2.

       

    Modern Giants

    In the 21st century, supercomputers have reached unprecedented levels of power. IBM's Roadrunner in 2008 achieved 1.1 petaflops, and the current leader, the Frontier supercomputer, boasts 1.1 exaflops. This makes it approximately 10 quadrillion times more powerful than the ENIAC, showcasing the staggering growth in computing capabilities 4.
