  • Salinity

    The Dead Sea's extreme salinity is a result of its unique water cycle. Most of its water comes from the Jordan River, which brings in minerals that accumulate as the water evaporates. This process has made the Dead Sea about 8.6 times saltier than regular seawater, although it's not the saltiest body of water on Earth 1. The high salinity also means that no macroscopic fish or plants can survive, though some microscopic organisms called haloarchaea thrive in these conditions 2.

    The Jordan river is a freshwater river and its water is used for agriculture and drinking. Like all freshwater bodies of water, there's a small amount of dissolved minerals in the water, including salt. Usually it's so slight that it doesn't really matter.

    The climate around the Dead Sea also preserves artifacts exceptionally well, contributing to the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the well-preserved fortress of Masada 2.

       

    Buoyancy

    Floating in the Dead Sea is a unique experience due to its high buoyancy. The extreme salinity makes it easy to float, but it also means that swimming is nearly impossible and any cuts or abrasions will sting intensely 3.

    If you get any of that water in your mouth or eyes, you will regret it.
