Initial Trapping

The Endurance's journey took a dire turn when it became trapped in pack ice, a situation described by Gary Arndt as being "frozen like an almond in the middle of a chocolate bar." The crew found themselves immobilized on January 19, 1915, just a day's sail from their intended landing point. With the southern hemisphere summer ending, it was clear they would be stuck until the next spring, facing the harsh Antarctic winter 1.

Stuck on a ship which was trapped in ice. There was no hope of rescue and there was no way to get the word out to anyone that they needed help.

As the months passed, the pressure from the ice began to disintegrate the wooden ship, forcing the crew to abandon it and salvage what they could, including three lifeboats crucial for their survival 1.

   

Survival on Ice Floes

After abandoning the Endurance, the crew faced the daunting task of surviving on drifting ice floes. They set up camp and hoped the ice would carry them to Paulette Island, where supplies were stored, but the ice never got close enough 1. The crew's resilience was tested as they endured months on the ice, with their situation becoming increasingly precarious.

They took all the supplies off the ship and set up camp on an ice floe. They left everything that wasn't necessary on the ship, including having to kill some of the younger dogs.

On April 9, 1916, the ice floe broke apart, compelling them to take to the lifeboats, marking a new phase in their struggle for survival 1.
