Thorpe's versatility was unmatched, as he competed in 15 different events across both competitions, showcasing his prowess in track and field despite primarily focusing on football in the years leading up to the Olympics. His achievements were so remarkable that King Gustav V of Sweden reportedly told him, "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world." 1

   

Medals Controversy

The controversy surrounding Jim Thorpe's Olympic medals is a significant chapter in his legacy. In 1913, it was revealed that he had played minor league baseball for a small sum, violating amateur status rules, leading to the revocation of his medals 1. This decision was widely criticized, as the violation was reported long after the Olympics, and many believed racial bias played a role. Decades later, in 1983, the International Olympic Committee reinstated his medals, recognizing him as a joint gold medalist, and finally, in 2022, he was acknowledged as the sole gold medalist for his events 2.
