Copyright Issues

Gary Arndt addresses the challenges of creating music-centric episodes due to copyright restrictions. While he has covered classical music pieces like Beethoven's 9th Symphony, using newer music is problematic because of potential copyright notices, even under fair use. He mentions the hassle of dealing with takedown notices despite having a valid fair use claim 1. Gary expresses his interest in exploring contemporary music, such as the origins of hip hop, which he finds fascinating.

One of the problems with doing episodes on music is that it really helps to play music during the episode. For certain old pieces of music that are over 100 years old, this isn't a problem. However, for newer music it becomes a big problem.

Research Methods

Gary explains his research process, which varies from episode to episode. He draws inspiration from books, movies, articles, and his travels, filling in details as needed 1. Most research is done online due to the daily production schedule, and he doesn't publish citations to save time. His academic background in mathematics, economics, political science, geology, and geophysics provides a broad foundation for his work 2.

Given that I have to produce a show almost every day and because the episodes are relatively short, most of the research has to be done online.
