  • El Clasico

The rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid, known as El Clasico, is one of the most intense in sports. These two teams have dominated La Liga, with Real Madrid winning the league 34 times and Barcelona 26 times 1. Their matches are not just about football; they have cultural and political significance in Spain, often serving as a proxy for broader societal issues 1.

The lifetime record between the teams in competitive matches is 97 wins for Real Madrid to 96 wins for Barcelona. It's almost like the Packers-Bears rivalry, if the Bears were actually good.

    ---

El Clasico occurs at least twice a year during the regular La Liga season but can happen more often in other competitions like the Copa del Rey or the European Champions League 1.

    Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao stands out in La Liga for its unique team structure and historical achievements. Known as the Lions, they only recruit players from the greater Basque region, a tradition they've upheld since 1912 2. Despite this limitation, they have won the Copa del Rey 23 times and have a rich history in Spanish football.

The reason Athletic Bilbao is my favorite team is simply that I visited their headquarters in their stadium when I visited Bilbao and they gave me a whole bunch of Bilbao swag.

    ---

Their homegrown talent approach has not hindered their success, making them a unique and respected team in the league 2.
