Yellowstone's evolution as a tourist destination began in the early 20th century with the opening of the Old Faithful Lodge in 1904. This lodge, built in the National Park Service rustic style, became a symbol of the park's growing popularity. However, managing the park's needs has always been challenging, especially with the introduction of automobiles in 1915, which the park's dirt roads were ill-suited for at the time 1.

   

Ecology

Ecological challenges have been a significant part of Yellowstone's history, particularly with the eradication of wolves in 1914. This decision, aimed at protecting elk and bison, disrupted the ecosystem by removing its apex predator 1. The wildfires of 1998 further highlighted the park's ecological struggles, as decades of fire suppression led to intense fires that sterilized the land.

The fires burned far hotter than they otherwise would have, making it difficult for life to return.

Conservation

Yellowstone's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 underscores its global significance. Despite ecological challenges, the park remains a premier destination, attracting over 4 million visitors annually 1. Its rich geological features and diverse megafauna contribute to its status as one of the world's greatest national parks.

Yellowstone is right up there amongst the greatest national parks in the world.
