The Sultanate of Oman

Geography

The Sultanate of Oman, located in the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, holds a unique position in the Middle East. Despite not being as well-known as its neighbors, Oman has a rich history and was once the center of a vast trading empire extending into Africa 1. Its geographical location is significant, bordering the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, and sharing land borders with Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia 2. Gary Arndt highlights Oman's distinctiveness, noting, "There are very few news stories about Oman. It isn't as sexy and modern as Dubai. It doesn't have the money of Qatar or Abu Dhabi."

Yet for myself and other people I know who have visited, Oman is actually my favorite country in the region.

Exclaves

Oman's territorial complexity is highlighted by its unique exclaves and enclaves. The Musandam Peninsula, an exclave separated from the rest of Oman, juts into the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint 2. This area is known for its dramatic geological formations, resembling fractal patterns. Additionally, Oman has an exclave called Mata, surrounded by the United Arab Emirates, which itself contains an enclave of the UAE, creating a fascinating territorial puzzle. Gary Arndt describes this intriguing setup:
