Assassination Plot

The assassination plot against Archduke Franz Ferdinand was meticulously orchestrated by the Black Hand organization. Gary Arndt explains that the group initially targeted the governor of Bosnia but later shifted their focus to the archduke. On June 28, 1914, six assassins were strategically placed along the motorcade route in Sarajevo, each armed with bombs, guns, and cyanide pills 1. Despite the careful planning, the initial attempts failed, with one bomb bouncing off the archduke's car and injuring others instead.

The third assassin managed to throw his bomb at the car with the archduke, but it bounced off the back and blew up under the car behind them, disabling it, injuring about 15 people, and putting a large hole in the street.

Immediate Aftermath

The immediate aftermath of the assassination was marked by confusion and political tension. After surviving the initial bomb attack, Archduke Franz Ferdinand expressed his outrage at the reception he received in Sarajevo 2. Gary Arndt describes how a miscommunication led the motorcade to make a wrong turn, placing them directly in the path of assassin Gavrilo Princip. Princip seized the opportunity, fatally shooting both the archduke and his wife, Sophie.

Coincidentally, one of the assassins just happened to be standing right at the corner where they turned as the cars tried to back up.
