Ethiopian Volcano

Gary Arndt recounts one of his most extreme travel adventures, a hike to the Erta Ale volcano in Ethiopia. The journey was fraught with unexpected challenges, including extreme heat and dehydration. Gary describes the harrowing experience of walking for hours in the hot night desert without water, relying on a camel for hydration.

Were it not for a fact that a guy with a camel was following behind us with water, I'm not sure what would have happened in the pitch dark in the Ethiopian desert.

Unpreparedness

Gary's group was unprepared for the conditions at the Erta Ale volcano, lacking essential gear like gas masks. They had to position themselves upwind to avoid the toxic fumes. Despite the ordeal, Gary reflects on the experience with a sense of accomplishment and would consider doing it again, now knowing what to expect.

What made the entire episode so bad was that I had no idea what we would be doing. None of us were prepared.
