  • Doe's Coup

    The political landscape of Liberia underwent a seismic shift with Samuel Doe's coup against President William Tolbert. Doe, a member of the minority Krohn people, led a small group of non-commissioned officers to overthrow the Americo-Liberian dominated government, which had marginalized native Liberians for over a century 1. His regime, the People's Redemption Council, quickly descended into chaos, marked by paranoia, fraudulent elections, and multiple coups 1.

    Doe was brutally tortured, including having multiple body parts cut off. And his body was hung up on the streets of Monrovia, and the entire torture incident was recorded on video.

    Civil War

    Liberia's civil war was a brutal conflict characterized by mass killings and the use of child soldiers. Charles Taylor, leading the National Patriotic Front of Liberia, capitalized on Doe's unpopularity to gain support and eventually won the presidency in 1997 with a controversial campaign slogan 2. His presidency was marked by corruption and involvement in regional conflicts, leading to further unrest 2.

    The war was exceptionally brutal, with mass killings taking place around the country and the use of Childs soldiers.
