Cromwell's military career began with the formation of a cavalry troop from his own lands, which evolved into the renowned Ironsides regiment. His innovative tactics and ability to inspire his men with religious fervor led to significant victories in key battles such as Edgehill, Marston Moor, and Naseby 1. Despite lacking formal military training, he quickly rose to the rank of lieutenant general by 1644 and became second in command to Sir Thomas Fairfax a year later 1.

Cromwell's success on the battlefield was due in large part to his innovative tactics and his ability to inspire his men with religious fervor.

Following King Charles's surrender, various factions vied for power, including monarchists, Presbyterians, and independents. Cromwell, leveraging his military success, emerged as a leader in the Puritan movement and was re-elected to parliament in 1648 2. His political acumen was evident as he navigated through these factions, ultimately supporting the trial and execution of King Charles to end the civil war once and for all.

Cromwell saw the new model army as the instrument of God's justice.
