Colonial Origins

Gary Arndt explores the colonial origins of the United States, highlighting the diverse backgrounds of its 50 states. Thirteen states began as British colonies, while others were territories under Spanish or French control before joining the Union 1. Territorial Changes

The transformation of territories into U.S. states often involved complex histories of independence and conflict. Gary Arndt recounts the story of the Republic of Freedonia, a short-lived entity in Texas that lasted less than a month in 1826 2. Similarly, the Republic of Indian Stream in New Hampshire existed from 1832 to 1835 due to unclear borders between the U.S. and British Canada.

The independent countries which have existed inside the territory of what is now the United States have a varied history, with some of them being nothing more than declarations by small groups and others being full blown legitimate countries.
