Phrenology, a pseudoscience that once captivated many, was largely developed by Franz Josef Gall, a German physician. Gall proposed that the brain was composed of smaller organs responsible for different personality traits, a concept he termed organology 1. His assistant, Johann Gasper Spurzheim, coined the term phrenology, derived from Greek words for mind and knowledge 1. Spurzheim became a major advocate, giving public lectures across Europe, though not everyone was convinced of its validity 1.

The core principles of phrenology were based on the idea that the brain is not a homogeneous unit but an aggregate of mental organs with specific functions. Gall believed that the size of these organs, reflected in the skull's shape, indicated personality traits 1. This led to the development of cranioscopy, a method to diagnose mental characteristics through skull examination 1.
