Great Zimbabwe was a pivotal trading hub in Southern Africa, connecting with distant regions through extensive trade networks. The city contributed gold and ivory to these networks, marking its peak during the kingdom of Zimbabwe's reign. Great Zimbabwe was probably a major trading hub for all of southern Africa and that goods were being traded by people from trade routes all along the Indian Ocean.

Cultural Artifacts

Cultural artifacts from Great Zimbabwe hold immense significance for modern Zimbabwean identity. Among these are the Zimbabwe birds, eight soapstone carvings that have become national symbols, appearing on the flag and various logos 1. Most of these artifacts were taken during the colonial period, but all except one have been returned to Zimbabwe. Despite the lack of written records, these artifacts provide insight into the civilization's cultural heritage.

The Zimbabwe bird has become the symbol of Zimbabwe. It can be found on their flag, formerly on their money, as well as on the logos for many companies and organizations in the country.
