Venue Constraints

The venue for Beethoven's legendary concert on December 22, 1808, was the Theater an der Wien, a private facility known for its lavish interior. This venue was one of the few options available in Vienna, as dedicated concert halls did not exist at the time. Gary Arndt explains that the theater was often booked for operas, leaving a narrow window for other performances. Beethoven managed to secure the theater just before Christmas, a time when operas were banned due to Lent and Advent restrictions.

The theater owner allowed Beethoven to do a private benefit concert because he had been very generous in the past in supporting concerts that benefited charity.

Orchestra Issues

The orchestra for Beethoven's concert faced significant challenges, including a lack of rehearsal time and the use of amateur musicians. The in-house orchestra was unavailable, forcing Beethoven to assemble a group of musicians who had never played together before. Gary Arndt notes that Beethoven's interference during rehearsals led to him being banned from them, further complicating the preparation.

During the choral fantasy, everything fell apart and they had to start over from scratch, something that would never happen with a modern professional orchestra.

Beethoven's Hearing Loss

Beethoven's progressive hearing loss significantly impacted the concert's execution. By 1808, his hearing had deteriorated to the point where it affected his interactions with musicians and his own performance. Gary Arndt highlights that despite these challenges, Beethoven performed as a piano soloist, showcasing his remarkable talent.

It was the last time that Beethoven ever performed in public. He was 38 years old, and his hearing loss had become so severe that he was no longer able to perform to his standards.
