Mikimoto's Impact

Kokichi Mikimoto revolutionized the pearl industry by developing the first oyster farm in 1888, transforming pearl cultivation from a rare occurrence to a systematic process. Although the technique for cultivating pearls was initially developed by British biologist William Savile Kent, Mikimoto's innovations allowed for the consistent production of spherical pearls indistinguishable from natural ones 1. He established a complete vertical operation, opening a store in Tokyo's Ginza district, and his company remains the world's largest dedicated to pearls.

Thanks to cultivation and innovations by Kokichi Mikimoto, pearls are much more common than they were in the past.

Global Expansion

The global pearl industry has expanded significantly, with China leading as the largest producer, followed by Japan. Pearl cultivation has spread to tropical regions, including French Polynesia, where black pearls are a major export 1. Pearls have become cheap enough that they can be purchased by regular people, not just by kings and emperors.
