  • Crime Spree

The crime spree of Bonnie and Clyde began in earnest in February 1932, when Clyde, along with Bonnie and Ralph Fultz, started robbing stores in small Texas towns. Clyde's weapon of choice was a 1918 Browning automatic rifle, a surplus machine gun from World War I 1. Their criminal activities escalated, leading to several violent confrontations, including the murder of a deputy in Oklahoma and a store owner in Texas 1. By March 1933, the Barrow gang expanded with the addition of Clyde's brother Buck and his wife Blanche, leading to more brazen crimes and confrontations with law enforcement 2.

Bonnie eventually opened up with the browning machine gun, forcing the remaining officers to flee.

    ---

The gang's notoriety grew, fueled by sensational media coverage, particularly of Bonnie's image as a gun-toting woman, which elevated their status to that of infamous criminals like John Dillinger 2.

    Police Shootouts

Bonnie and Clyde's confrontations with law enforcement were marked by intense shootouts and narrow escapes. In Joplin, Missouri, a firefight with police resulted in the deaths of two officers, further cementing their status as public enemies 2. The gang's ability to evade capture was often due to sheer luck, such as when a bullet accidentally triggered a horn on an armored car, allowing them to escape a police raid in Platte City, Missouri 3. Despite injuries and losses, including Buck's death and Blanche's capture, Bonnie and Clyde continued their crime spree, even orchestrating a daring prison break in 1934 3.

This was a direct attack on the law enforcement system. And now the state of Texas and the FBI were committed to taking them down.

    ---

Their actions drew the relentless pursuit of law enforcement, particularly by Captain Frank Hammer of the Texas Rangers, who was determined to end their reign of terror 3.
