AM Challenges

AM radio faces significant technical challenges that limit its effectiveness today. Gary Arndt explains that AM stations have had to adapt by focusing on talk-oriented content like sports and news due to their lower sound quality, which is less suited for music 1. Additionally, AM signals struggle with reception inside buildings and must reduce power at night to avoid interference, as they can travel much farther after sunset 1.

Once the sun sets, AM signals can bounce off the ionosphere and travel much further. If every AM station were to keep broadcasting at night, stations that were far apart would start to interfere with each other.

Digital Shift

The shift towards digital platforms is reshaping the radio landscape, posing a threat to traditional broadcasting. The big question is, does radio have a future at all? Yes, but it might be very different technology than what we've been used to for the last 100 years.
