Initial Motivation

Gregory Watson's journey to revive the 27th Amendment began with a college paper that received a disappointing grade. His professor, Sharon Waite, dismissed his work, prompting Watson to embark on a mission to prove her wrong by getting the amendment ratified. He tirelessly wrote to members of Congress, seeking support for his cause, and eventually found an ally in Senator William Cohen from Maine. Watson's determination was fueled by a desire to demonstrate the power of a single, dedicated individual.

I wanted to demonstrate that one extremely dedicated, extremely vocal, energetic person could push this through. I think I demonstrated that.

Campaign Success

Watson's campaign gained momentum as more states began to ratify the amendment. Starting with Maine in 1983, other states followed suit, with Colorado joining in 1984 and several more states in the following years. By 1992, the amendment had enough support to become part of the Constitution, marking a historic achievement driven by Watson's persistence. His success story reached his former professor, who was astonished by the impact of her initial grade.
