Flying Cargo

The concept of a massive flying cargo ship emerged as a strategic solution during World War II to bypass the perilous Atlantic waters dominated by German U-boats. Gary Arndt explains that the idea originated from shipbuilder Henry Kaiser, who was instrumental in constructing Liberty ships, and saw potential in aviation to solve logistical challenges 1. Kaiser collaborated with Howard Hughes, a visionary in aviation, to propose this ambitious project to the U.S. government.

The proposal aimed to create an aircraft capable of carrying 150,000 pounds, equivalent to 750 soldiers or two Sherman tanks, across the Atlantic 1.

   

HK-1 Proposal

The HK-1 aircraft proposal, a joint venture between Hughes and Kaiser, received government approval for the development of three aircraft over two years. Gary Arndt notes that the aircraft was designed to have a wingspan of 320 feet, making it the largest airplane ever conceived at the time 1. The design required it to be a seaplane due to the lack of landing strips capable of accommodating its size, which also helped reduce weight by eliminating landing gear.

The aircraft was designated the HK-1, reflecting the joint project of Hughes and Kaiser.
