Siege Tactics

The strategic use of artillery and siege tactics played a pivotal role in the American and French victory at Yorktown. On October 9, a massive artillery bombardment began, targeting British positions and effectively neutralizing their large guns by October 11 1. This allowed Washington to order the construction of a new trench closer to the enemy, crucial for tightening the siege. The French and American forces executed daring nighttime raids on redoubts nine and ten, with Alexander Hamilton leading the charge on the latter 1.

Hamilton managed to take the redoubt, losing only nine men, with 30 wounded.

Surrender

The final surrender at Yorktown marked a turning point in the American Revolution. On October 17, after failed attempts to break the siege and escape, Cornwallis was forced to surrender 1. Negotiations involved both American and French representatives, with Washington ensuring French participation to maintain alliance integrity 2. Cornwallis requested traditional honors of war, but Washington denied them due to past grievances.

The British were forced to march out with their flags furled, their guns on their shoulder and their band playing a British tune.
