Cambridge Rules

The evolution of football owes much to the influence of English schools like Cambridge, which played a pivotal role in establishing the early rules of association football. Rugby Split

The historical split between association football and rugby marked a significant divergence in the evolution of these sports. The Football Association, formed in 1863, built upon the Cambridge rules and banned carrying the ball, which led to a split with teams like Blackheath that preferred the rugby style 2. This division was further solidified with the formation of the Rugby Union in 1870, which later experienced its own schism over professionalism, leading to the creation of the Rugby League 2.

At the creation of the Football association in 1863, the Blackheath team split over a disagreement on carrying the ball, which cemented the split between the two games.
