Douglass and Lincoln

Douglass, a prominent abolitionist, was both a supporter and a fierce critic of Lincoln. While he recognized the strategic importance of Lincoln's leadership during the Civil War, he vehemently opposed the slow progress on emancipation and the unequal treatment of Black soldiers. Douglass believed in utilizing the political system to combat slavery, advocating for a more explicit war against it. His criticisms highlighted the moral imperatives that he felt Lincoln should have embraced.
