Curt recalls, "I like gadgets," which fueled his innovation in developing small waterproof boxes for everyday items 3. The brand name, Otterbox, was inspired by the playful and aquatic nature of otters, a suggestion from his wife Nancy that resonated with the company's ethos 4.

       

    Growth Strategies

    Otterbox's growth was significantly propelled by strategic innovations and the rise of smartphones. The company initially made bulky, waterproof cases, but a pivotal moment came when they realized not all customers needed waterproofing. "Not everybody needs a waterproof case," Curt noted, leading to the creation of the Defender case, which became a bestseller 5. The introduction of the iPhone marked a turning point, with Otterbox quickly adapting to the new market demands and securing a million-dollar purchase order from AT&T for BlackBerry cases, showcasing their ability to capitalize on emerging trends 6.
