  • Early Brewing

Ken Grossman's early exposure to brewing came from his neighbor, Cal Moeller, who was a pioneer in home brewing and a scientist. Ken was fascinated by the process and began experimenting with brewing in high school, even though home brewing was illegal at the time. He recalls hiding his early, often terrible, batches from his mother, using malt extract and yeast bought from local stores 1.

The alcohol, the PH, and the hops are all inhibitory to toxins. Not that you can't make bad beer, but it's pretty impossible to make beer kill yourself, those kind of toxins.

    ---

Despite the challenges, Ken's passion for brewing grew, leading him to roast his own grains and experiment with different beer styles 2.

    Inspiration

Ken's inspiration to turn his brewing hobby into a business came after visiting Anchor Brewery and New Albion, where he saw the potential for small-scale brewing. These visits showed him that it was feasible to start a brewery with basic equipment and a unique product 3.

I think the process was as intriguing as the finished product, because in the late 70s, it would have been an unusual taste.

    ---

Ken was captivated by the alchemy of brewing, transforming simple ingredients into complex flavors. This passion for creating distinctive beers eventually led to the founding of Sierra Nevada Brewing Company 4.
