Bob Moore's journey into the natural foods movement began with a serendipitous discovery of an old mill, which he transformed into Bob's Red Mill. This venture coincided with the health food boom of the 1970s, positioning his company at the forefront of the movement. Bob recalls the early days, saying, "I took three months to the day to get the doors open, and I began a concerted effort to make my life what I thought I was capable of doing with this building" 1. His dedication to producing whole grains and flours, such as millet and sorghum, resonated with consumers seeking healthier options 2.

   

Employee Ownership

Bob's commitment to his employees is as remarkable as his business success. In 2010, he transferred ownership of Bob's Red Mill to his employees, ensuring their stake in the company's future. Bob explains his philosophy, "I'm giving it away because I want to. I mean, the Bible to me was so clear. To do unto others as you would have them do unto you" 3. This generous act reflects his belief in shared prosperity and the importance of community.

   

Independence

Despite numerous acquisition offers, Bob Moore chose to keep Bob's Red Mill independent. He valued the autonomy and lifestyle his business provided, resisting the allure of buyouts. Bob shares, "I knew as soon as they bought me out, even though they always tell you that everything's going to stay the same, but everything changes" 4. His decision to remain independent allowed him to maintain the company's original values and mission.
