Early Life

Rob Kalin's journey to founding Etsy began with a non-traditional path through education and early work experiences. Growing up near Boston, he struggled with the conventional schooling system, ultimately choosing to leave high school to pursue his passion for photography and carpentry 1. His early career included working at a camera store and later, construction jobs in New York City, where he learned valuable skills and developed a sense of community among fellow workers 2.

I stopped going to high school for my junior year, and then at the end of that year, most of the advice being given to me was, just, go take your GED.

Life After Etsy

After leaving Etsy, Rob Kalin embraced a quieter life focused on personal projects and community involvement. He moved to the Catskills, where he rebuilt his home and engaged in local educational initiatives, such as founding a Montessori school 3. Despite the challenges of his departure from Etsy, Rob found fulfillment in returning to his roots as a maker, crafting high-end speakers and exploring new ventures at the intersection of technology and childhood development 4.
