Depression is a debilitating condition that impacts 5% of the population and is the number four cause of disability. It has two forms, bipolar depression, and major depression, which is also called unipolar depression. Depression is characterized by the presence of certain things and the absence of a few particular things, such as grief, sadness, anhedonia, guilt, and sometimes even delusional thinking. Depression is also a risk factor for other illnesses and makes other medical and psychiatric illnesses worse. Depression is perhaps the most debilitating condition worldwide, and yet in contrast to other medical conditions like cancer, we actually have a fairly limited number of tools to approach depression. Severe depression is disabling, is having cancer without treatment and dying from a cancer without treatment.
