Addiction is a complex condition and it can be incredibly challenging. However, it's important to remember that it's not necessarily hopeless. As Dr. Anna Lembke pointed out in our discussion, addiction can be conceptualized as a disease, given the brain physiologic changes that occur with sustained heavy drug use. There are indeed individuals who tragically succumb to their addiction, but this doesn't mean that all cases are hopeless. It's crucial to understand the balance and the dopamine deficit state, and how for some people, their balance may still be tipped to the side of pain even after periods of sobriety. This understanding can help us maintain compassion and hope for those struggling with addiction.
