I have a problem with waking in the middle of the night around 2 am or 3 am and feeling awake. I usually fall asleep on the sofa around 7:30 pm and nap. This is not on purpose; I just can’t keep my eyes open. My night routine is to go to sleep around 9:30 pm and wake around 5 am. However, I never sleep until 5 am. The sun usually is not out when I wake up. By the time the sun is out, I have to get ready for work. I am a menopausal woman and on hormone replacement, which has greatly helped. I usually have my coffee around 6 am. Do you have any suggestions? I much appreciate any feedback. Cheryl
What if one struggles with early morning waking? I'm actively trying to resolve insomnia that I've had for 7 years, in which I wake at 3 AM despite the time I go to bed. I've tried everything recommended by my doctor, CBT-I therapist, Dr. Matthew Walker, and Huberman, and nothing has improved. Regardless, if I wake at 3 AM, I either stay in bed and drift in and out of light sleep stages or do non-sleep deep rest techniques, but per my CBT-I therapist, I don't fully engage in my day until 5 AM. By that time, would I have missed nourishing my cortisol spike with eating by 5:30? Maybe I need to get my cortisol tested to know. If so, is there a recommended 24-hour cortisol test?
I have a very late evening chronotype, meaning it is natural for my body to not want to fall asleep until midnight and to want to get up around 9am. However, I need to be up for work by 6:30am. What can I do to feel more refreshed after waking?
