Wired for Pessimism

Our brains are wired to focus on the negative due to our survival instincts, even in a world where the threats have evolved. Our amygdala, often mistaken as a danger detector, actually acts as a salience detector, grabbing hold of anything novel in the environment. This tendency to focus on the negative has roots in our evolution as hunter-gatherers and is a result of our brain's lack of a hardware upgrade in over 200,000 years.
