  • Diagnosis Story

Patti's diagnosis story is both unique and humorous, involving a midnight bathtub incident. At eleven years old, she attempted to quench her thirst by swimming in a bathtub, complete with goggles, which her brother found amusing enough to alert their parents 1. This unusual behavior was a result of her high blood sugar levels, leading to a quick diagnosis of type 1 diabetes at the hospital 2.

I thought that somehow that would help with how thirsty I was. I don't think I was actually thinking very straight at that time.

Her story highlights the often bizarre symptoms that can accompany diabetes, especially when undiagnosed.

    Hospital Challenges

Patti's initial hospital experience was marked by a lack of communication and inadequate support. She recalls being confused by medical procedures and frustrated by the absence of clear explanations from the staff 3. This lack of understanding contributed to her long-term struggle with managing diabetes, as she felt unsupported and uninformed 4.

They really didn't explain what they were doing. I do remember at one point I had to be on a keto strip and the reading was large.

The experience left a lasting impact, influencing her approach to diabetes management for years.

    Journey to Acceptance

Patti's journey from diagnosis to acceptance was fraught with emotional challenges and denial. Initially, she struggled with anger and depression, feeling isolated and misunderstood 5. Her teenage years were marked by rebellion and denial, as she resisted the constraints diabetes imposed on her life 6.

I figured, well, hey, if I just ignore it, it'll go away, and that'll help me be more, quote, normal, unquote.

Despite these challenges, Patti's story is one of resilience, as she continues to work towards understanding and managing her condition.
