After Getting Sober

Beginnings

Brendan Leonard's introduction to climbing was unexpected and initially unappealing. A gift of climbing gear from a friend led him to try the sport, despite his initial reluctance and fear during his first climb 1. Living in Phoenix and working at an outdoor gear store, he was encouraged by coworkers to give climbing another chance. After moving to Colorado, Brendan took a climbing lesson, which transformed his perspective. He became deeply passionate about the sport, immersing himself in guidebooks and exploring climbing routes 1.

I did nothing right, despite their instructions and best efforts, and I was just terrified of it. This is just not a fun experience for me.

New Identity

It was like, holy shit, I'm a mountaineer. Like, I'm a climber. This is, like, this amazing, you know, identity that it just developed because I went and tried to find something to replace alcohol.
