Erection cells are part of what are known as wake-promoting cells in the brain. These cells, including dopamine, orexin, serotonin, and noradrenaline-producing cells, are active when we are awake and are inhibited by sleep-promoting cells. The role of erection cells is closely linked with the function of dopamine cells, both contributing to wakefulness 1 .
