The MIT Challenge was conceived by as a project to replicate MIT's four-year computer science curriculum using their OpenCourseWare, which provides free online course materials. After graduating from university, Scott chose this challenge to study computer science because he wanted to learn the subject without returning to school and incurring high tuition costs.

Scott aimed to pass the final exams of these classes within 12 months, starting in October 2011 and finishing in September 2012. While some deviations were made due to unavailable courses, he largely adhered to the curriculum and even included programming projects to ensure a comprehensive learning experience. The challenge received significant attention and proved that high-quality education can be attained outside traditional university settings if one is disciplined and uses available resources 1 2 3.

The project highlights the feasibility of self-directed learning and the potential to gain valuable skills without formal enrollment 4 5.
