What is the history of whale oil?
Sources:
Shane Parrish discussed the history of whale oil on The Knowledge Project podcast with guest Nathan Myhrvold. They highlighted that in the 19th century, whale oil was primarily used as fuel for lamps to provide indoor illumination at night. However, the discovery of petroleum-based oil, which required less refining to replace whale oil in lamps, led to a substantial decrease in whaling. The innovation of the electric light bulb, which outperformed any flame-based illumination, further reduced the demand for whale oil to almost nil and essentially concluded its usage for lighting. Myhrvold also mentioned how, ironically, a celebration was humorously depicted by the whales in a cartoon published by the British humor magazine Punch, thanking Colonel Francis Drake, the first to drill for oil, for his role in reducing the need to hunt whales 1.
