In the first phase of MAPS Performance, it's important to understand the distinction between explosive training with heavy weights and explosive training with lighter weights for speed.
For Phase One, the goal is to lift explosively with heavier weights, even though the bar might not move quickly. The intent is to generate as much force as possible. In this phase, choose a weight that is challenging but aim to lift it explosively, knowing that the actual speed will be slower due to the heavier load 1 2.
In contrast, later phases focus on lighter weights to maximize speed and acceleration. The aim in those phases is to choose a weight light enough to allow for fast bar movement, but this is not the focus in Phase One 3 4.
