Black Hole Growth

The Schwarzschild metric serves as an idealization that doesn't fully capture the complexities of black hole formation due to the presence of matter. As matter falls into a black hole, it creates perturbations that allow for growth, with new material quickly crossing the event horizon and reaching the singularity. Observers outside the black hole cannot distinguish between matter at the event horizon and that which has already crossed it, as the process occurs in less than a millisecond.
