The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has surged from 310 parts per million in 1950 to 422 parts per million by December 2023, marking an unprecedented increase in a geological timeframe. Human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, have driven this change, with emissions rising sevenfold since 1945. The current levels are not only higher than any seen in the last couple of million years but are also approaching double the pre-industrial levels of greenhouse gases.
