Control of Breathing

Breathing is primarily an automatic process regulated by the medulla oblongata, which sends signals to various muscles for inhalation and exhalation. During heavy breathing, additional areas of the medulla activate to engage abdominal muscles for forceful exhalation. Chemoreceptors play a crucial role in monitoring carbon dioxide and oxygen levels, allowing the body to adjust breathing rates as needed, while conscious control over breathing is also possible but not necessary for its function.
