Crust Composition Explained

The continental crust is significantly thicker than the oceanic crust, ranging from 25 to 70 km compared to just 7 to 10 km. Its composition, rich in felsic rocks, contributes to its lower density, allowing it to sit higher on the mantle. In contrast, the denser mafic rocks of the oceanic crust sink lower, creating the ocean basins we see today. Understanding these differences sheds light on the geological structure of our planet.
