Intraplate Earthquakes

Deep earthquakes challenge our understanding of tectonic activity, as they occur at depths where rocks are expected to be more plastic. Intraplate earthquakes, like those from the New Madrid series in the southeastern U.S., add to this mystery, occurring away from plate boundaries and leaving their causes largely unexplained. Despite being within a single tectonic plate, these events reveal hidden faults that can still generate significant seismic activity.
