Protein Import Mechanism
Proteins destined for the mitochondria must remain unfolded to navigate through the small channels of the Tom and Tim complexes. As they emerge from the ribosome, special chaperone proteins bind to them, guiding their passage through the outer and inner mitochondrial membranes. Once inside, the signal sequence is cleaved, allowing the proteins to fold into their functional forms.In this clip
