Middle-aged stars, like our sun, spend about 90% of their lives fusing hydrogen into helium in a stable manner. As stars age, they can reach a point where they can no longer fuse heavier elements, leading to dramatic endings, such as Betelgeuse's anticipated supernova. While estimates for Betelgeuse's explosion vary, it could happen within the next 100,000 years, a blink of an eye in astronomical terms.
