Gender Traits

Eugenia Cheng challenges traditional gender norms by proposing a separation between gender and character traits. She introduces the concepts of ingressive and congressive traits, where ingressive traits focus on individualism and single-track thinking, while congressive traits emphasize collaboration and community. Cheng argues that these traits should not be tied to gender, as everyone can embody a range of behaviors.

Personal Journey

Reflecting on her academic journey, Eugenia Cheng shares her transition from an ingressive to a congressive approach. Initially, she embraced individualism to succeed in academia, but later realized the drawbacks of such behavior. This led her to leave the traditional tenure track and pursue a role at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she could teach math in a more inclusive environment.

I have to get out of this before I become sort of fossilized into this kind of behavior that I don't like.
